MAZZOTTI BOOKS
A Unique Blend of Artistry and Engineering in Bookbinding
Background
MAZZOTTI BOOKS is an independent bookbinding and printing studio located in East London, owned and operated by me, Manuel Mazzotti. As a bookbinder, designer, artist, and trained engineer, I combine my diverse skill set to create limited edition books, prints, book prototypes, and presentation boxes. My clientele includes independent artists, architectural firms, and publishing companies.
Objective
The main objective of MAZZOTTI BOOKS is to establish itself as a platform for contemporary bookbinding research, challenging traditional notions of book design and material usage. The studio also aims to promote the book as an art object, fostering discussions and developing tools to share bookbinding and printing knowledge, resulting in innovative and engaging storytelling experiences.
To achieve these objectives, my approach involves:
Exploring new materials and techniques in bookbinding and printing.
Collaborating with various clients to create customized bookbinding solutions that cater to their unique requirements.
Engaging in ongoing research and experimentation to push the boundaries of book design
Approach
Outreach
Bookbinding Workshops for Potential Clients
In 2017, I initiated a series of short, free bookbinding workshops targeting potential clients, particularly architecture studios and fashion houses. By offering these workshops to employees across different companies, I avoided traditional aggressive sales tactics. Participants not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed a genuine interest in Mazzotti Books' bookbinding and printing services. As a result, the studio secured a significant number of clients without relying on conventional sales pitches.
Innovation
Artist and Writer Residencies
In 2018, I introduced a series of artist and writer residencies at MAZZOTTI BOOKS with the goal of attracting new talent and fresh perspectives, providing artists and writers with a platform to showcase their work while expanding the studio's profile and capabilities. Since its inception, the residencies have been highly successful, drawing numerous skilled individuals and contributing to the studio's win at the prestigious bi-annual 2019 International Bookbinding Competition organized by the Society of Bookbinders. The residency program has significantly impacted the company's growth and reputation, inspiring me to continue exploring innovative ways to contribute to the studio's success.
Achievements
My work has gained recognition in the bookbinding and design community, earning me several accolades, including:
1st prize at the International Bookbinding Competition 2019 organized by the Society of Bookbinders.
The prestigious QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) scholarship in bookbinding and paper.
The Maureen Duke Award in bookbinding.
Impact
MAZZOTTI BOOKS has successfully bridged the gap between a traditional bindery and a publishing company, showcasing the potential of limited edition books. The studio's work has been displayed in various museums and exhibitions, both nationally (UK) and internationally. Furthermore, it is part of permanent collections in institutions such as Stanford Libraries, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Tate Library, The British Library, London College of Fashion, and National Poetry Library
Conclusion
Through my innovative approach to bookbinding and printing, I have positioned MAZZOTTI BOOKS as a leader in the industry. By consistently applying UX design principles to all my services, I have ensured a user-centered approach that values prototyping and continuous feedback from clients. This methodology has helped refine and enhance my offerings, resulting in a more engaging and satisfying experience for my clients. The studio continues to redefine the boundaries of book design, inspiring artists, designers, and storytellers to explore new avenues in the realm of physical books.
